چکیده

Momentum is a simple and widely used trick which allows gradient-based optimizers to pick up speed in low curvature directions. Its performance depends crucially on a damping coefficient β. Large β values can potentially deliver much larger speedups, but are prone to oscillations and instability; hence one typically resorts to small values such as 0.5 or 0.9. We propose Aggregated Momentum (AggMo), a variant of momentum which combines multiple velocity vectors with different β parameters. AggMo is trivial to implement, but significantly dampens oscillations, enabling it to remain stable even for aggressive β values such as 0.999. We reinterpret Nesterov’s accelerated gradient descent as a special case of AggMo and provide theoretical convergence bounds for online convex optimization. Empirically, we find that AggMo is a suitable drop-in replacement for other momentum methods, and frequently delivers faster convergence.

Wingbeat time and the scaling of passive rotational damping in flapping flight.

Flying animals exhibit remarkable capabilities for both generating maneuvers and stabilizing their course and orientation after perturbation. Here we show that flapping fliers ranging in size from fruit flies to large birds benefit from substantial damping of angular velocity through a passive mechanism termed flapping counter-torque (FCT). Our FCT model predicts that isometrically scaled anima...

Neuromuscular control of free-flight yaw turns in the hawkmoth Manduca sexta.

The biomechanical properties of an animal's locomotor structures profoundly influence the relationship between neuromuscular inputs and body movements. In particular, passive stability properties are of interest as they may offer a non-neural mechanism for simplifying control of locomotion. Here, we hypothesized that a passive stability property of animal flight, flapping counter-torque (FCT), ...

Analytical Matching of Optimal Damping Characteristics Curve for Vehicle Passive Suspensions

To facilitate the damping matching of dampers for vehicle passive suspensions, this paper proposes an analytical matching method of the optimal piecewise linear damping characteristics curve. Based on the vehicle vibration model, taking the suspension dynamic deflection as the constraint, by the vibration acceleration and the wheel dynamic load, an objective function about the relative damping ...

Damping in flapping flight and its implications for manoeuvring, scaling and evolution.

Flying animals exhibit remarkable degrees of both stability and manoeuvrability. Our understanding of these capabilities has recently been improved by the identification of a source of passive damping specific to flapping flight. Examining how this damping effect scales among different species and how it affects active manoeuvres as well as recovery from perturbations provides general insights ...
